Gastroenterologist – Full-Time (Contract)
Location: Finger Lakes VA Health Care System
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (No weekends or on-call)
Employment Type: Full-Time Contract (1.0 FTE, 2080 hours/year)
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Gastroenterologist to join our team at the Finger Lakes VA Health Care System. This role involves providing comprehensive gastroenterology care to our veteran patient population in a state-of-the-art clinical environment.
The position is primarily focused on direct patient care (approximately 90%), delivering high-quality, evidence-based gastroenterology services in both outpatient and procedural settings.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide full-spectrum Gastroenterology care, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of gastrointestinal conditions.
- Perform a wide range of endoscopic procedures, including but not limited to:
- Colonoscopy (diagnostic, biopsy, polyp removal, bleeding control, via colostomy, etc.)
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) (diagnostic, biopsy, dilation, lesion removal, bleeding control)
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy (with biopsy/snare/ablation/bleeding control)
- PEG tube replacement
- Conduct bedside consultations for non-ambulatory patients and outpatient consultations as appropriate.
- Ensure procedures are completed within 30 days of consultation, in compliance with VA standards.
- Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions in coordination with the next level of care.
- Follow all established policies regarding prescription and administration of medications (no sample medications).
Administrative & Quality Activities
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and committee meetings as directed by the Chief of Service or Chief of Staff.
- Maintain compliance with nationally recognized guidelines, including:
- American College of Physicians – Internal Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines
- American College of Gastroenterology Guidelines
Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship or Work Authorization required.
- MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
- Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia.
- (Applicants with restricted, suspended, or revoked licenses will not be considered.)
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine with a Subspecialty in Gastroenterology (ABIM).
- Current BLS and/or ACLS certification (or equivalent).
- Up-to-date continuing medical education and competency documentation.
Additional Requirements
Applicants must provide or be prepared to provide:
- Proof of education and training (including explanation of any gaps).
- Current NPI and DEA numbers.
- State license (with issue date).
- Medical liability insurance (with expiration date).
- Credentialing and privileging documentation (if available).
- National Criminal History Check (if previously completed).
Work Schedule
- Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Clinic sessions must be attended on time; punctuality and physical presence in clinic or OR at scheduled start time is required.
- No after-hours or weekend responsibilities.
